The Decline of Wellness in the Modern World

The first human, that we know of, existed 3.2 million years ago. The introduction of conventional medicine, by chemical/synthetic means, began 159 years ago.Apothecary, the use of nature to form a medicinal, dates back to 2600 BCE to ancient Babylon. Clay tablets were found with medical texts recording symptoms, the prescriptions, and the directions for compounding it.

So what happened to us between our existence on planet earth and conventional medicines?

We populated, we became god fearing, we over populated, we developed diseases from our over population and lack of cleanliness, we spread those diseases to other countries (and visa verse), we found gold and silver, we became greedy, we let our egos loose control, and now we are what is referred to as modern man living in a developed society. We call it developed so we can feel good about ourselves and our actions. We convince others that this is how we should be and there is more to be had in this world. However in doing so, we leave behind that which provides for us, nourishes us, and keeps us whole.

Scientists even say that we are completely developed as a human species and this in part is why we are so focused out there. But instead of trying to focus on developing a better society for all, we are firm believers in the sense of self ego we have been taught. We believe, instead, that what I want is what I shall have.

And yet if you just looked around you at the trees, plants, animals, and weather, you could be more satisfied with your life than you could ever be with the industrialization of the world. For we have seen first hand how industrialization, when not looked at from all sides, destroys lives.

I remember being little and not needing much. My world was much smaller, you might say, but that's not necessarily true. My parents valued what they had and valued life instead of possessions. I look at some of my family, especially those in my generation, and see how hard and fast they have changed; allowing society to dictate who they are, what they believe, and what they say (regurgitation). Thinking for yourself in order to create the best life possible (for all of your life) has been diminished. Their are no guarantees in this life, but if you are not happy with today what is the point of going down the same road you are on tomorrow?

I hear it all the time: things were different 30 years ago, 50 years ago, etc. Their weren't the problems we have today. When in truth we did, we just had a lot less people on the planet dealing with those issues. We didn't have a Baby Boom, instead we had a pharmaceutical explosion. It's not that we had too many babies, it's that not enough people are dying like they used to. While conventional medicine has healed those some, the majority are given drugs to maintain their ailments, not heal them. And so for the last 80 years it's been getting awfully crowded around here.

This doesn't mean it necessarily existed where you lived. In fact it's more likely that the mother of the home was the medicine woman. She would be taught by her elders the use of plant and botanical in order to treat the family's symptoms. It is only in the last 100 years, since the emergence of pharmaceutical patents created by drug companies that less is heard about nature's answers. Instead we are bombarded with drug ads, drugs free to buy on store shelves, and drugs to buy illegally on the street.

These things are always at the forefront of our minds now, so that is what we go to when we have an ailment. Sadly we are never asked why. Why are you feeling this way? What has been going on your life lately to cause such a pain to occur? How much rest do you get? How often are your eyes in motion? How much personal stress are you feeling placed upon you? And so on...

We have lost the way of the human being and have become the human doing.

I understand that it is much easier to ask a pharmacist and grab something off the shelf to ease your pain than it is to learn about herbs or understand naturopathy. However, there are people out there to help you with that, if you made the effort to do a little research. In fact, you probably would only have to ask a friend, or someone you think might know someone, and let the universe bring that person to you instead. And while it may take some time to relearn where you go for answers, over time you will be able to help your self, your family, and your friends, bring less toxins into their life bringing their chances for disease to a lesser level as well.

Let me give you one example of changing something in your life, that you can tell others about and change immediately your life as well as theirs.

It's called an Air Freshener. Those toxic little bombs people plug into their light sockets, or put on their kitchen counters, that they are breathing in while continuously breaking down their immune system. They are chock full of chemicals, even those that say they are "natural" or contain an essential oil. They may contain a small amount of essential oil, but I guarantee they also contain perfume or fragrance oil. These are not products of nature, but instead created in a lab with chemicals to smell the same way for long periods of time. They are not tested on the how they can affect your lungs or brain over a long period of time.

You can easily buy a carrier oil (almond, jojoba, grapeseed, argon, apricot kernel, etc) and a good quality full spectrum essential oil (no additives, just the plant/flower oil) to use in your plug in containers (clean them thoroughly first). Or purchase a mister in whatever size you need and place a few drops of essential oil in the water before turning on. This method I prefer since you can change out the water/oil to what you need for that day. Kids got a stuffy nose? Add eucalyptus. Working on a project/homework? Add Frankincense. Time to wind down before bed? Add lavender. And so on...

I recommend using one oil instead of blends as they can easily clock the mister/oil plug. I have used together (eucalyptus and peppermint) to clear my lungs while recovering from cold, but once you get into three or more oils in a blend you can easily damage them.

So that is why I have created this online journal. A place where I can share some of those medicinal remedies with you to help you make a shift in your perception of what works and what doesn't. You are only limited by your knowledge, and if you look around you and see the world through that of mother earth and nature, you will expand your knowledge by leaps and bounds. And maybe even heal your body.

I would never tell you to not see your conventional physician. Never! Instead I would continue on with your health and wellness where the physician has stopped. Remember, you doctor is only able to help you with the conventional means he or she knows about. And oftentimes, those things don't help enough to create a better quality of life. I should know, in the past I have suffered by being passed around from doctor to doctor to never get any answers. Not even those to lessen the pain. However, nature has always been my backup and has always helped me getting through the some of the hardest times of my life. Even after loosing all my memories to a brain injury, I eventually began remembering my naturpathic teachings and my love for all things from the earth. It has been a slow recovery, years in fact, but I do see a light at the end of the tunnel. And I do give credit to my current team of doctors and their openness to my trying/using natural means to help myself. In fact, all of them are asking me what I'm doing so they in turn can help their other patients too.

So while you may think it's an uphill battle for me to help others, with me as this little drop of water in the huge ocean of the world we live in, it's OK. Really, it's fine. I don't mind being one little drop, because that one little drop can ripple out in to the world to help someone.Who in turn will help someone else, and so on. So that little ripple has suddenly become a downpour, possibly even a hurricane.

So while the wellness o the modern world has made a huge decline in the last 10, 20, or even 30 years that doesn't mean it has to be that way. It doesn't mean that those that cross my path need suffer needlessly.

I hope you come back often, learn much, and share with others so that they too can become a ripple in ocean of life.

In shamanic cultures naturopathic means are used first because patients are taught to be in tune with their own body's needs from childhood. If you are on conventional medicine, be sure to learn about the side effects that they can create when adding naturopathic herbs to your wellness program, before adding them to your routine.
